The Black Box

The idea

Morgan Stanley wanted a team challenge to be run on the tenth story of their new building in Canary Wharf. We came up with the "Black box" a room within a room . A cunning maze riddled with challenges and surprises.

The Maze

The maze was used by each competing teams of six on three or four occasions, each trying to improve and obtain the fastest time. A first attempt time was about 45 minutes which was reduced by one time to under 5 minutes. Considerable planning coordination and team work was needed to achieve this.

Design

We built the structure as a "one off" at our base in Wales and installed it over the weekend in London. Why? Well what Morgan Stanley wanted was purely a fun team challenge and an opportunity for newly opened training floor to be visited. It was in-situ for two weeks and a great success.

Application

The Black box was recommissioned for a seven week series of training programmes run at BNFL. Here the learning objectives were less fun orientated but more a vehicle for looking at such issues as

• Establish a team spirit in a new team being formed
• Establishing a strategy for team performance improvement
• To form a basis for existing or new teams to go on to solve "workplace" related problem
